  • 1 28-ounce can crushed tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream


  1. In a medium bowl, combine the chicken, oil, cumin, coriander, garam masala, turmeric, salt and pepper. Stir to coat the chicken. Cover and refrigerate for at least 15 minutes or up to overnight.
  2. In a small bowl, combine the yogurt, garlic, ginger and onion. Set aside.
  3. In a large skillet, heat the oil over medium-high heat. Add the chicken and cook, stirring occasionally, until golden brown on all sides, about 8 minutes. Remove the chicken from the pan and set aside.
  4. Add the yogurt mixture to the same pan and cook, stirring, until the onion is softened, about 5 minutes.
  5. Add the crushed tomatoes and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes.
  6. Return the chicken to the pan and stir in the cream. Simmer, stirring occasionally, for 10 minutes.
  7. Serve the tikka masala over basmati rice or with naan bread.


  • For a spicier version of the dish, add some red chili powder to the marinade.
  • For a richer flavor, use half-and-half in place of the heavy cream.
