How to Cook Fish and Chips

Fish and chips are a classic British dish, and arguably one of the most popular dishes in the UK. It’s a delicious combination of crunchy fried fish and fluffy chips (fries) that is perfect for any occasion, and it’s surprisingly easy to make at home. Here’s a simple guide on how to make fish and chips.

Ingredients

  • 2-3 large white fish fillets (cod, haddock, or halibut)
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups breadcrumbs
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2-3 potatoes
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder (optional)

Instructions

  1. Wash the potatoes and cut them into chips (fries). Heat a deep-fryer to 350°F (175°C) or fill a large heavy-bottomed pot 3-4 inches (7-10 cm) deep with vegetable oil and heat it to 350°F (175°C). Place the chips into the hot oil and fry them until golden brown, about 5 minutes. Remove from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to absorb the excess oil.
  2. Cut the fish into strips or chunks. Place the flour, eggs, and breadcrumbs into three separate shallow dishes. In a fourth dish, mix together the salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Dip the fish pieces in the flour, then the egg, and then the breadcrumbs. Place the breaded fish pieces onto a plate.
  3. Carefully lower the fish pieces into the hot oil and fry for 2-3 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to absorb the excess oil.
  4. Serve the fish and chips with tartar sauce, ketchup, or your favorite condiment.

Tips

  • You can use any white fish for this recipe, such as cod, haddock, or halibut.
  • You can also fry the fish without breading for a lighter version of fish and chips.
  • For a healthier version of this dish, you can bake the fish and chips in the oven instead of frying.
  • If you don’t have a deep-fryer, you can use a pot and a thermometer to fry the fish and chips.
